How do I prepare my child for a photoshoot so they look relaxed?

“Will my child cooperate?” It is perhaps the most frequently asked question by parents before a family shoot.

The answer: with a little preparation – and especially low expectations – it usually goes much smoother than you think.

Expectations are key

The most beautiful family photos are rarely the ones where everyone is looking straight ahead and smiling neatly. It’s the spontaneous moments – a laughing fit, a child running away and being called back, a hug that’s just a bit too enthusiastic – that are cherished most afterwards. So, above all, let go of the idea that everything has to be “perfect.”

How to prepare your child

Talk about it positively, like a fun outing, not as something they “have to do their best for.”

Avoid the word “must” in the run-up – “we’re going to take photos later and you can just be yourself” works better than “you must sit still and be good.”

Don’t announce it too far in advance to young children – a day or two beforehand is usually enough to avoid tension.

Let them help choose (a little) what they wear; it gives them a sense of control and makes them calmer.

On the day itself

Plan the shoot for a time when your child is well-rested and not hungry – so avoid just before naptime or right before dinner.

Bring a favorite toy, stuffed animal, or snack just in case.

Arrive a little early so your child can get used to the environment before we begin.

And what if things don’t go as planned?

That happens to every family sometimes, and it’s not a disaster. We build in time to take a break, distract, or just wait until the moment is right.

We never force a pose or a smile – a pure, spontaneous moment is always more beautiful than a forced laugh.

Trust the process

Our approach is built specifically around children as they really are: sometimes shy, sometimes a bundle of energy, sometimes both within the same ten minutes. That’s exactly what makes the photos so valuable.
